Journal Artical #9: Playing the Skype NETS 2 and 4

Weller, T. (2009-2010). Playing the skype. Learning and leading with Technology online journal, 37(6),

Great article about Skype in the classroom and how one teacher used it. The teacher had artist talk about the music business and what it takes to be a famous artist. The teacher was also amazed at how technology has changed so much that ten years ago this would of not been possible. Skype is a location online where students can talk to experts in the field of their choice and ask questions. I believe this is great resources for students in middle school and high school who are thinking of what career path to take. They can ask experts in the field and come to a conclusion if they would like to continue their education or make a change. Skype seems like a really great place where teachers are no longer the researcher of many questions but rather asking the expert right in front of them.

What are the positives of using skype in the classroom?
Students can talk to experts and find out that everything takes a team effort to complete. Students can see that it takes other people behind the scenes to make everything happen. Students could also talk individuals like music artists and movie makers and editors and learn about jobs that did not even know about. By using Skype in the classroom students will just get one more chance to leave the classroom and have fun talking to experts.

Is this affordable?
According to the article all you need is broadband access and some webcams. Really that is almost everyone and every district practically could do this. It also seems very easy to do and currently right now webcams are very inexpensive and very accessible to everyone. This technology can be used to districts that have very low social economic students which would be a plus for them. Students in every district could talk to experts and see the positives of all of these jobs and truly be empowered by education.
