cyber saftey NETS 3 and 4
By going to the JCSS website and working as a collaborative group we where able to look at different parts of internet safety. I looked at Piracy and Plagiarism and did a student worksheet to see how a student would learn from this worksheet. I really recommend this site for all teachers because it has all the dilemmas that schools are dealing with. It gives teachers the right to teach digital citizenship and students the tools they need in order to succeed in a technological society.

Journal Artical # 6: Web 2.0 Assignment Nets 3 and 4
For this assignment I looked Google Earth “gearth” because I teach math and advanced math and I am currently trying some of these lessons out.Wow, I was just blown away with the following site realworldmath.org. This site although new has very intrusting real world math application lessons. This is something I was trying to find for some time now, I looked at the currency exchange site and how important is it for students to know the exchange rate of the world. We are currently becoming a very global economy and with Mexico so close student will have to learn the importance of other countries exchange rates. I really loved how Google created this program to target students to better understand Math and really fall in love with concepts. It is what many Math teachers have said in the discussions boards our wiki’s and it just makes Math more visual an appealing for students.
Currently Google only has a couple of lessons on the site and are wanting to place more with more teacher feed back so it looks like teachers are really going to have to share this information and have them promote it to each other. The site is free and wow another lesson that just is amazing is Sketch up from Google what an awesome way for students to just fall in love with engineering and marketing. This is a great site for many visual learners or students who have a passion for the arts. Imagine being able to create a product from scratch and being able to present it to the class. The days of two dimensional objects are gone and welcome the three dimensional world of math as it should be.

This article really hammers the nail in my philosophy of computing being incorporated in the classroom environment. The article states that learning curve in computing is increasing and that administrators, teachers, stakeholders, are holding the idea off. The article also states that by the time one kindergarten generation graduates from college computers would have rapidly changed the job market. Which is true for every generation, the world is changing and current administrators are not moving fast enough. We need to incorporate technology in the classroom now in order to save jobs, paper, and many other resources that could be used with technology in the classroom. I also see the gap between teachers and technology when many of the teachers today can not meet the ISTE standards to a sixth grade level. Although many students they are teaching use technology on a daily basis and are way advanced then many of their teachers.
As educators what do we do?

Great article about Skype in the classroom and how one teacher used it. The teacher had artist talk about the music business and what it takes to be a famous artist. The teacher was also amazed at how technology has changed so much that ten years ago this would of not been possible. Skype is a location online where students can talk to experts in the field of their choice and ask questions. I believe this is great resources for students in middle school and high school who are thinking of what career path to take. They can ask experts in the field and come to a conclusion if they would like to continue their education or make a change. Skype seems like a really great place where teachers are no longer the researcher of many questions but rather asking the expert right in front of them.

What teachers need to do in order to make online learning a great experience for students was outlined in the article. Customizes which basically means allow yourself to learn all of these tools and use them to teach students to be digital citizens. Teachers also need to be monitoring and seeing what students are posting on a daily basis. I also like the discipline plan the article talked about coping and showing the student the inappropriate content and then either have them apologize and then take away their right to post online. Many of these projects need to be student driven with teachers overseeing so that students can thrive online. The article also mentioned that students need to make digital portfolios and that teachers need to help them create these portfolio. Teachers need to be dynamic and able to create new and innovative projects online that students can share with future colleges.

I know this sound like a lot of fun and I am all for student driven online learning but when It comes to me and my classroom it does take a lot of my class time and I have to tell my principal that many of these projects occur during class time. For instance I use think quest and I post a question and I have students posting read aloud and I really do not have time to monitor it, till I see it the next day. In class we read all the postings and luckily for me not one of my students has posted something inappropriate. If I have posting over the weekend I do have my technology teacher oversee them and if anything is negative I have her call me or text me. But I know many teachers are probably like myself and have very few time to see what is going on online it is very helpful to have a technology teacher to help you out.
What kind of discipline should be taken?

Wow, this was an amazing article because currently my school site has been talking about video conferencing. At many private schools there is a restriction on how many field trips students can take and it does hinder how many trips a teacher can make. I also really liked how the article maid it clear about the difference of Asynchronous versus interactive virtual field trips (VFTs).It also gave some really good resources teachers could start out. I currently marked them down on my delicious accounts because I know some day my school site or district can provide this kind of technology for students. I also liked how the article mentions what to look for in the fact that one needs the following h.323 compatible and capable of IP-based connections. I know many students and parents would be all for VFT’s because currently just to schedule a field trip it takes a lot of planning on the teachers part and many parents have to take time for their already busy schedules. Can you imagine the wealth of information during a video conference an expert can give a student on many topics in Science, mathematics, engineering, and historical facts.
Could the district pay at least one video conference per year?
I think if the district allowed one trial run for every teacher they could see the impact of it has on each classroom and it would give the students the opportunity to use the technology. I know in this economy many low social economic districts probably could not afford the technology and probably the teacher would have to for the majority of the conference. Could the sites give grants or specials to these schools on a trail basis. I believe many students would actually like this technology and opt to do it again.

Journal Artical #5: We're not in Kansas anymore NETS 1 and 5

I really enjoyed this artical becuase it brings up a very important issue that is occuring in my school and in many schools of coworkers. The cyber bullying or the bad use of technology by students and how they end up taking advantage of everyone around them. The issue brought out some very important issues and that is to be a digital citizen. Wow! that is what I thought but as I read the artical it start making more and more sense and really who is training these students. It is either the parents or really themselves making their own rules as they go on. The artical hit a very important point in the fact that as educators we have to make examples of ourselves as positive digital citizens and teach students about the positives of computing.I really enjoyed the artical becuase I never thought the answer was so clear, but like many things we can also teach students how to be great digitial citizens.
What is the extent that a school should get involved with students after school?
I believe if a student is doing a school project online and instant messaging other students they must tell their parents and should be monitored at all times. I have had parents complain about students texting each other with bad language and ugly words and it was not school related. When does a teacher say it is the parents responsiblity to be a parent and make decisions for their student. If a student is texting and it does not pertain to a school project a parent must talk to other students parents or take their phones.
Can digital citizens be graded?
If students are given online projects such as wiki's one can see the comments and reply and grade students digital citizenship. I strongly believe we are doing a deservice to our students if we do not model or talk about cyber bullying and was is considered ok and not online. Many teachers I know do not even have email accounts and do not even know what is going on with todays students. I think it should be a basic online course that many students should have to take as part of the No child left Behind standards. If it where online many students would at least know what is expected of them in the digital world.

The artical started off by talking about the importance of using primary sources and creating documentaries in the classroom. It also talked about having students look at online virtual exibits to inhance learning. Based on thier primary sources students created documentaries in the classroom where they edited, revised, and added other media sources. The artical talked about the engagements of student increased in the classroom as well as understanding of the concepts. I also really liked the story board explanintion or experiment where some students did it using media versus those that did not. The results speak for themseleves students really liked and took the time to create a awesome media peice to present. They also got the content of the material compared to those that did not use the media driven projects.
Could I use media projects in Science?
I have always wanted to make video's about science concepts or scientist lives. I always have to look for some on youtube and the weirder they are the better students like them. So how much fun would a group have creating a video editing, adding media and then presenting the video to the class.Can you imagine the documentation and how much a creative side of a student would come out, what a blast they would have creating it as well.

I think at first like anything a teacher does it would require parents assistance. But like all projects once you get the projects rolling they become second nature and a common theme for the year. Social bookmarking (Delicious.com)
1. In the National Archives I found an intrusting site called the virus of 1918 and wow the pictures are just amazing and it really paints a picture of what happened in Seattle at the turn of the century.
Primary sources are so important to students because they really tell us what happened from the point of view of a picture, video, or journal writing. It is a way of telling the truth of the past even though we do not want to believe it. A primary source usually makes many people see the past and except the experience of many. That is why by looking at these photos one can see what others had to go through in order to survive the epidemic. This was a very good scientific historical account of the past.
2. NEA-Achievement Gap.
The first group I looked at where the ELL Special Ed learners because teaching in southern California and so close to the border you will have a Second language learner sometime in your career. In my case not only did I have a Spanish speakers in my first public school experience but also a Ukrainian, and Mong speakers. I believe that in order to classify any of these students for testing one must understand what students that learn English as a second language go through in order to learn the English Language. That is why I feel that learning what ELL students are special Ed because I believe it is not right to classify all Second language learners as special Ed but rather in my experience as GATE.
The second group I looked at was a report on the status of Hispanics in Education and overcoming a history of neglect. Ever since I entered the credential program I knew that my population always has had issues ever since my mom and dad went through the U.S. public school system. The public school system has never recognized the importance of being Bilingual and not everyone can be bilingual. Unlike my parents and myself who are Bilingual we have had to find inspiration in Universities. The Hispanic population is currently growing at a fast rate all over the U.S. and I believe being culturally aware of my community will help out any future teacher. Especially when it comes to understanding how parents see teachers in such high regard and what they expect from their teachers in return.
The Third group I looked at where African Americans and how parents need to hear about the victories they have in the classroom. I really enjoyed reading this article in terms of the fact that in my first year teaching I encountered a student that had always been told negative things and never had been praised for the good things she did. I remember leaving a note on her desk for every day she did a good job and I can also remember the last day of class her parents wrote a note for me saying thank you for keeping us informed about our daughters positive behavior because she was new this year and we where afraid she would start a fight.
3. Stop Cyber bullying
My score was a Cyber Saint. I had not really done any of those things but when I thought about my classes and what where some of the problems we had as a class I see where many of my students needed to take this test.
I really liked all of these articles because it basically tells teacher that technology can be used in a positive way but with regulation. I also liked the article about instant messaging because in our school two students choose to play around with this feature on their own and got into some really big trouble. I can see how the school could have avoided this be informing parents and giving them the proper training. Again parents need to see what their kids are doing online and watching. I could see how many of these articles could help inform students, staff, and parents about what can be done in certain situations.
4. Kathy Schrock’s Guide to educators
In the subject access area I usually do use this site in my science class because there is a wealth of sites that I can incorporate into my daily classroom lessons. I usually get visuals for my students, for example the Bill Nye website that links up with this site just reinforces all of visual learners and auditory learner’s needs. I have also done some projects with enature.com and students just love researching and seeing the pictures and sounds from this site. I could not be more satisfied with these links and how many times I have used them through out my teaching career.
Under teacher helpers I could see that a future teacher would need help in following category about Podcasts in the classroom. I can see how podcasts could help a variety of students for instance second language learners could have certain books and listen to them as a resource. I could also see students as mentors or tutors explaining certain steps in math in order to help future students using podcasts. Or using this technology to help second language learners with projects it helps them refine their projects. Podcasts could also be created for other students to see what’s happening in certain classrooms.
5. Multiple Intelligences
Test results: bodily Kinesthetic: 100%, Interpersonal 100%, Intrapersonal 88%
The video I saw was Multiple Intelligences leave no child behind, what I learned from the video is something we where trying to do in Oceanside. But at that same time No child left behind kicked in and everything we had started fell apart because of testing. I really felt that this was one of the reasons I left public education because I felt like I just teaching a test and not really developing a students love or knowledge of learning. My experience in school was of learning songs and just having a great time and I know that no child left behind has put a burden to testing on many teachers. I totally agree with the video and how each child should feel a sense of pride and accomplishment every day at school.
6. Teaching Tolerance
The grade would be sixth and the subject science and health. I choose the following bullying guidelines for teachers because this seems to happen at every school site. I always have deal with bullying either outside my classroom or on the playground or in another classroom. Bullying is a big problem and most students especially in the middle grades tend to except it more in order to fit in. Most students do not even know they are being bullied because they think the bully is their friend when in reality they are being taken advantage off. I will use this in one of my next lesson to wake students to the realty that bullying exists in their class.
7. Multicultural education and equity awareness quiz
1. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, what is the percentage of U.S. schools with no teachers of color on staff? 40% , This is one of the reasons I went into education in order to help and give the perspective of Hispanic children and parents. I would also like to look at the schools here in California and I would like to see the ratio of students make up and their teachers. When I was in the credential program this was the most obvious case except the worse was we had no one of African American decent.
2. What percentage of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender high school students report that their teachers “never” or “rarely” respond to homophobic remarks made by other students, according to a national study by GLSEN? 84.5%, this was not a shocker for me growing up and hearing the jokes around the guys and teachers letting them get away with it was just something I could not let go. In my class know I try my hardest to say something when one of my students makes a remark about gender, or sexual orientation and I always tell them you are a product of your household. With that I usually get them to be quite and apologies.
8. Netiquette Guidelines
My Score: 80% why should we teach our students about netiquette because it is a good way of resolving future problems between students when dealing with online assignments? Teaching students the golden rule about treating humans equally is a very good rule to follow when dealing with junior high students going online and doing assignments. I also believe the use of Emit icons can be valuable in the classroom as long as they are used in good context and not used inappropriate. Since you can not send a picture of what your saying the reader sees the emoticons and can paint a picture of what your saying in that mood.
After doing this assignment I really found out how much students already know compared to me and the generation gap that is occurring in our schools. By looking at these sites and being able to use them with students this will allow me to make them digital citizens. Most of these sites have rules for students to follow in form of Netiquette.
1. In the National Archives I found an intrusting site called the virus of 1918 and wow the pictures are just amazing and it really paints a picture of what happened in Seattle at the turn of the century.
Primary sources are so important to students because they really tell us what happened from the point of view of a picture, video, or journal writing. It is a way of telling the truth of the past even though we do not want to believe it. A primary source usually makes many people see the past and except the experience of many. That is why by looking at these photos one can see what others had to go through in order to survive the epidemic. This was a very good scientific historical account of the past.
2. NEA-Achievement Gap.
The first group I looked at where the ELL Special Ed learners because teaching in southern California and so close to the border you will have a Second language learner sometime in your career. In my case not only did I have a Spanish speakers in my first public school experience but also a Ukrainian, and Mong speakers. I believe that in order to classify any of these students for testing one must understand what students that learn English as a second language go through in order to learn the English Language. That is why I feel that learning what ELL students are special Ed because I believe it is not right to classify all Second language learners as special Ed but rather in my experience as GATE.
The second group I looked at was a report on the status of Hispanics in Education and overcoming a history of neglect. Ever since I entered the credential program I knew that my population always has had issues ever since my mom and dad went through the U.S. public school system. The public school system has never recognized the importance of being Bilingual and not everyone can be bilingual. Unlike my parents and myself who are Bilingual we have had to find inspiration in Universities. The Hispanic population is currently growing at a fast rate all over the U.S. and I believe being culturally aware of my community will help out any future teacher. Especially when it comes to understanding how parents see teachers in such high regard and what they expect from their teachers in return.
The Third group I looked at where African Americans and how parents need to hear about the victories they have in the classroom. I really enjoyed reading this article in terms of the fact that in my first year teaching I encountered a student that had always been told negative things and never had been praised for the good things she did. I remember leaving a note on her desk for every day she did a good job and I can also remember the last day of class her parents wrote a note for me saying thank you for keeping us informed about our daughters positive behavior because she was new this year and we where afraid she would start a fight.
3. Stop Cyber bullying
My score was a Cyber Saint. I had not really done any of those things but when I thought about my classes and what where some of the problems we had as a class I see where many of my students needed to take this test.
I really liked all of these articles because it basically tells teacher that technology can be used in a positive way but with regulation. I also liked the article about instant messaging because in our school two students choose to play around with this feature on their own and got into some really big trouble. I can see how the school could have avoided this be informing parents and giving them the proper training. Again parents need to see what their kids are doing online and watching. I could see how many of these articles could help inform students, staff, and parents about what can be done in certain situations.
4. Kathy Schrock’s Guide to educators
In the subject access area I usually do use this site in my science class because there is a wealth of sites that I can incorporate into my daily classroom lessons. I usually get visuals for my students, for example the Bill Nye website that links up with this site just reinforces all of visual learners and auditory learner’s needs. I have also done some projects with enature.com and students just love researching and seeing the pictures and sounds from this site. I could not be more satisfied with these links and how many times I have used them through out my teaching career.
Under teacher helpers I could see that a future teacher would need help in following category about Podcasts in the classroom. I can see how podcasts could help a variety of students for instance second language learners could have certain books and listen to them as a resource. I could also see students as mentors or tutors explaining certain steps in math in order to help future students using podcasts. Or using this technology to help second language learners with projects it helps them refine their projects. Podcasts could also be created for other students to see what’s happening in certain classrooms.
5. Multiple Intelligences
Test results: bodily Kinesthetic: 100%, Interpersonal 100%, Intrapersonal 88%
The video I saw was Multiple Intelligences leave no child behind, what I learned from the video is something we where trying to do in Oceanside. But at that same time No child left behind kicked in and everything we had started fell apart because of testing. I really felt that this was one of the reasons I left public education because I felt like I just teaching a test and not really developing a students love or knowledge of learning. My experience in school was of learning songs and just having a great time and I know that no child left behind has put a burden to testing on many teachers. I totally agree with the video and how each child should feel a sense of pride and accomplishment every day at school.
6. Teaching Tolerance
The grade would be sixth and the subject science and health. I choose the following bullying guidelines for teachers because this seems to happen at every school site. I always have deal with bullying either outside my classroom or on the playground or in another classroom. Bullying is a big problem and most students especially in the middle grades tend to except it more in order to fit in. Most students do not even know they are being bullied because they think the bully is their friend when in reality they are being taken advantage off. I will use this in one of my next lesson to wake students to the realty that bullying exists in their class.
7. Multicultural education and equity awareness quiz
1. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, what is the percentage of U.S. schools with no teachers of color on staff? 40% , This is one of the reasons I went into education in order to help and give the perspective of Hispanic children and parents. I would also like to look at the schools here in California and I would like to see the ratio of students make up and their teachers. News letter Nets 1 and 5
Final Newsletter
By creating a newsletter on word pad that is appealing to parents and students, Teachers can bring life to many of their documents going home. We learned how to incorporate awesome titles into our headers. We also learned to incorporate pictures and clip art, as well as borders. I also learned how to give the text two columns so that it looks like a actual newspaper. Once again this project just enhances any teachers introducaiton letter to the class.

Journal Artical # 3: Keeping the peace NETS 2 and 5

This article was really intrusting because this is the type of case that would probably happen at my middle school. The Article was about the gap between parents and staff versus students that where abusing their right to instant message each other. The school I believe was given laptops by a company and all the students had access to the instant messaging that came with the laptops. Many students started to abuse their rights and started using the technology for negative aspects like taking pictures of their mom's in night gowns. This article also talked about how some students found a positive side to the technology because it closed the gap of many students that do not have really good social skills. Overall they found out that technology can be harmful without proper training and set guidelines for students. I really enjoyed the ending that talked about how they where able to solve their problems and are still working on making their program better. So in a way it is an article that tells us not to be afraid to use technology but rather that we will learn from it.
What are the positives of instant messaging in the classroom?
I can see the positives of instant messaging in many aspects for instance if you are doing a science lab out side the classroom. One student could be recording data on a spread sheet in the class while others are outside. Also if they have a question about anything they could instantly ask the teacher the same question and have a response within seconds. So let’s say you are in a middle school class and you finish your work for one class and you would like to begin another assignment for another teacher but you have a question that needs to be asked till the end of the period. Well you could simply instant message any of your teachers about any questions. I could also see the possibilities of students using I chat to work on research projects. I can see the positives out way the negatives if you are able to some how regulate the problems.
What could be some of the problems?
Like anything all it takes is one joker to ruin it for every one else in the class. Just like any technology students could totally lose their focus and begin to use this technology in a negative fashion. Can you imagine if you are struggling student and you do not want to do your class work what would happen is a simple copy paste away. What about inappropriate pictures of other students or of your teacher and the rights of others in the classroom? What about students allowing outside individuals to come in and Chat as well or bullying during a chat. It is a lot of problems but I believe with proper training and examples students would benefit from this technology.

Journal Artical #2: Using podcasts to develop a global perspective NETS 2 and 3

The article basically talks about how podcasting in high school can be an effective tool in reaching a global audience. It talks about how high school students looked at Global warming in a social studies class and they created a debate based on the opinions of many world leaders and scientists. The debate would feature different opinions from individuals all over the world and what they believed was causing Global warming. It basically allowed students to record and create a document that was seen around the world with a great amount of research and editing.
Can all grades use podcasting in the classroom?
This is just one more way technology is making the world more global and connecting everyone to create a very educational experience for all. I can see how podcasting can be used in the classroom at all levels, for instance students in the younger grades could be learning about the jungles of Brazil and they could actually trade with lower grade students from Brazil and see their podcasts and get a great idea of what the jungle is really like. Wow, the use of podcasting is endless for instance in Science students could view actual scientific studies and ask the scientists questions about their research.
Would low social economic students have the opportunity to purchase this sort of technology?
I know with the current situation you would have to have parents volunteer some of this technology. It would probably take a great deal of parents helping out with the program at first. As more and more funding comes to public schools I know students would love to document their stories in a educational manner. Just look at YOUTUBE many students use this form of media but it is not very credible. Once again I think it comes down to the teachers making the assignment clear and grading the podcasts according to their criteria. Journal Artical # 1: Computing in the clouds NETS 1 and 2

What the article basically talked about was the use of the cloud such as Google docs or wiki's to do work and not worry about storage devices. This could really help school districts because all documents presentations and grade programs could be kept online and could be accessed from anywhere as long as you have internet capabilities. I also liked how the author gave real life experiences and seeing the positives of using this technology in the classroom. He also mentioned that most of the cloud sites are free and only charge if you would like to upgrade your saving capabilities. Overall this was a great article that really informed me about the technology that is out their and I have always had this problem when I was in college. I would type a paper and have to save it on a floppy A drive and sometimes you would forget it or lose it and wow this was just allot of trouble. I could also see the negative aspect for young middle school students using this technology because of privacy issues. He also mentions that Googledocs does and will not read and use the information that is sent to this locations. Overall just a very informative article about what the cloud could do in the future of our Schools and our students learning abilities.

Currently I am working in a private school and I know how hard it is for parents to allow students to have their own email account. A teacher can only filter and watch what is being sent to the website but what about other spam mail that our young minds are exposed to. For this reason many of our students are not allowed to use their own email account everything is sent to them through a parents filtered email address that allows parents to view first. I believe the cloud could work if you had a websites like wikis to create and post and students would not have to submit an email account in order to be invited. I believe as an educator we already have to much to worry about and I sure don't want to regulate email accounts and what kind of spam mail most students are looking at.
Can the cloud revolutionize learning with students?
As an educator I can see the positives of using the cloud after taking this course I can see the potential of using Wiki's space in terms of what a better way to show parents a polished product of their student’s progression. It does not use paper so the cost of printing and material are drastically dropped it leaves a record that students can be proud of and at anytime they can take anyone their. I believe when students are able to present their wikis learning will be taken to a whole new level. I have just seen what students can do in Wiki's and wow I can not wait to have assignments created and presented to the class. Just think all those students that have test anxiety and those with different learning abilities able to make an online creation or assessment that is permanently their for all to see.
